Reduction of Labor Hours: Reform Project for the Implementation of the 40-Hour Workweek

Reduction of Labor Hours:  Approved Implementation of the 40-Hour Workweek

On February 25th, 2026, the Chamber of Deputies approved, both in general and in particular, and without amendments to the bill submitted by the Senate, the reform filed by the President of Mexico, Ms. Claudia Sheinbaum, regarding the reduction of the statutory workweek, which will decrease gradually from 48 to 40 hours. Such reduction shall become effective as of January 1st, 2027, in accordance with the following rules:

Year Workweek Hours
2026 Entry into force and transition period
2027 46 hours
2028 44 hours
2029 42 hours
2030 40 hours

This reform will also be enacted at constitutional level, in order to safeguard the rights of Mexican employees, and in no event shall it entail any reduction in wages or benefits.

Pursuant to the approved document, the reform decree shall enter into force on the date of its publication, that is to say, January 1st, 2027, granting the Congress a period of ninety (90) calendar days from such publication to enact the corresponding amendments to secondary legislation, i.e. the Federal Labor Law.

The approved document was forwarded to the Legislatures of Mexico’s Federal States for their vote and approval and, once the required votes have been obtained, the reform will be published in Mexico’s Federal Official Gazette.
